Does This Sound Like You?

Are you feeling fatigued or totally “wiped out” most days despite a full night's sleep?

Do you know in your heart that something is wrong, despite the fact that your labs come back “normal”. Does your doctor tell you that your symptoms are just part of “getting older”?

Are you tired of going from doctor to doctor, chasing a diagnosis?

Or perhaps, you feel like you have a mystery illness and no one hears or sees you?

Well, we know what you are going through! In fact, your symptoms are telling you something is wrong and it could be Lupus.

The Functional Medicine Approach To Lupus

What most conventional-trained doctors don't realise is that there is a wide range of factors that can impact and cause an autoimmune condition. This can include environmental toxins, stealth infections, and nutritional deficiencies just to name a few.

Heavy metals, which have made their way into our food chain, can damage our organs and impact immune function. Diet has a huge impact on all autoimmune conditions and can be the cause of regular flare-ups that keep you in that cycle of chronic fatigue.

In addition, we are exposed to many more man-made chemicals (so-called xenobiotics) today – present in medications, beauty products, and cleaning supplies that disrupt proper hormone and immune function.

These toxins accumulate inside your body, literally getting stuck in your tissues, ultimately triggering more serious disorders that affect hormone balance, digestion, joint health, and proper liver function.

That’s why in functional medicine, we never treat the symptoms – but rather start with an in-depth look at your medical history, your toxic load, and exposure to problematic environmental triggers, informed by advanced lab tests to identify anything that can impact immune function.

As part of our holistic approach towards lupus and overall immune health, we then devise a full body-balancing protocol to support improved immune function, which may mean restored energy and fewer aches and pains. We also help you balance all the major areas that can trigger flare-ups including diet, gut health, lifestyle and stress factors, sleep habits and more.

Signs & Symptoms Of Lupus

Lupus can be difficult for your doctor to diagnose as symptoms can often mimic those of other illnesses.

Common symptoms of lupus include:

  • Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling
  • Unexplained weight gain (or having trouble losing weight)
  • Sluggishness, low energy, fatigue
  • Brain fog, poor focus and memory
  • Fever
  • Skin rashes or lesions
  • Shortness of breath or chest pains

Causes and Conventional Treatment

As with any autoimmune condition, there is a long list of factors that can cause lupus, many, including emotional/mental stress, gut dysbiosis, hormonal imbalances, environmental toxins, and genetic factors.

Often autoimmune conditions don’t happen overnight but are caused by continual stress on the body from toxins, viruses, or gut conditions that go unchecked. Another reason autoimmune conditions are not diagnosed is because people don’t monitor a gradual decline in their health over time. They often assume they are just aging or feeling stressed, but once they finally reach that “autoimmune threshold” more serious symptoms like chronic fatigue and intense joint pain set in which alerts them that something is wrong.

If lupus is properly diagnosed, which is not the norm, the conventional treatment is immunosuppressive drugs and steroids which may lessen some of the symptoms but fail to treat the causes of lupus and recognise the many triggers. Unfortunately, the drugs can also come with unwanted side effects.

While we are in no way anti-medication, we believe that by addressing the root causes of the autoimmune process and teaching people how to identify and steer clear of their specific triggers, it may be possible to keep the use of powerful medications to a minimum.
